Last Sunday, Santos Nunez, 50, jumped out of a moving vehicle and ran into the bush near Arran, Sask., just two days after arriving in Canada on a visitor's visa.
At first, it appeared the man had suffered a medical crisis and had become disoriented and separated from his group, but RCMP soon discovered he may have faked a stomach ailment in order to get away.
They said he had a significant amount of cash on him and suspected he might be headed to the United States.
On Wednesday, he was found and turned over to Canada Border Services Agency, which had issued warrants for Nunez. His wife, Leonarda Bonilla Nunez, was also arrested by RCMP in Winnipeg on Wednesday and turned over to border services.
Nunez's son, Carlos Angelo Bonilla, has been worried about his father.
Through a translator, he said his father had come to Canada to help build a deck for a Canadian he had met back home.
Bonilla said he was surprised to hear his father, who works as a hotel superintendent, had jumped from a car and made a run for it. "He never had a problem with nobody or the police."
