“This will be an historical visit that a Canadian minister visits the country in a bilateral manner and is a symbol of the ever closer relations between both countries,” the diplomat said.
He said Ablonczy’s visit will father strengthen the ties between both countries and thanked the Dominican people for welcoming the more than 750,000 Canadians that visit their country every year.
Ablonczy, who holds the senior position since January 2011, was chosen representative in the House of Commons in for the first time in 1993 and reelected in the 1997, 2000, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2011 terms, said the emailed statement from the Canadian Embassy. “In August of 2007 she was designated Secretary of State in charge of Medium Company and Tourism, then Minister of State in charge of that same agency in 2008. In 2010 she was designated Minister of State in charge of the Aged.
The senior official has also been the parliamentary secretary of the minister of the Treasury, as well as member of the permanent commissions of Citizenship and Immigration, of Human Resources Development and of the Status of People with handicaps and Health problems.
“Minister Ablonczy is a graduate of Calgary University in Education and Laws. She is married and has five children and five grandchildren,” the Canadian Embassy said, adding that during her stay in the country, she will have a busy agenda, including meetings with President Leonel Fernandez, with government officials, among many activities.
“Canada was the pioneer in the all included tourism in the North Coast in 1983. There are more than 200 direct flights between the country and Canada per week during the high season,” it said, noting that the Dominican Republic is the world’s fourth biggest destination for Canadian tourists.
