Dominican Republic's trash becomes cash

Dominican Republic’s ever growing mountains of trash annoy the citizens and pollute the groundwater, but can be traded in the stock market from now on, the same as any commodity.

The thriving recycling business came to the fore Thursday when the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Central American Environment and Development Commission (CCAD) launched the Central America and Caribbean Industrial Residues Bourse (Borsicca).

The trade mechanism brings together those who have recyclables and those who want to buy it, here as well as abroad.

The mechanism works electronically and will allow companies to gather, recycle and add value to trash, right on the Web.
