Niagara-on-the-Lake had tried to sell the Ford pumper for $3,000 for the past three years, but there was no interest in the discontinued model. Fire Chief Ken Eden recently received a request from a Canadian businessman who was trying to help the City of Sosua obtain a vehicle.
"They do not have the resources to buy a replacement," Eden reported to the corporate services advisory committee Monday. "It would be a worthwhile donation on our part to assist a fire department less fortunate than ours."
Eden said the truck is in good condition but several design features make it unattractive to most North American buyers, including a gasoline engine, standard transmission and hydraulic brakes. He added that the open canopy at the rear of the cab for carrying firefighters was discontinued around 1990 for safety reasons.
The truck will be picked up at the St. Davids fire station and its disposal will save the town almost $1,500 in annual insurance costs.
