Dominican Republic plans to offer 1,000 MHz to mobile services

The Dominican Republic is planning to offer 1,000 MHz in total for the provision of mobile telephony and internet services. The country currently uses 330 MHz of spectrum for mobile broadband services.

According to Perez Taveras, president of the Dominican Republic Telecommunications Institute (Indotel), the initiative is part of the government’s National Frequency Allocation Plan, which is currently in the public consultation phase. The country’s internet subscriber base has increased from 4,819 in 1996 to 622,931 at end-2010. Around 58% of internet subscribers use fixed connections, mainly ADSL and cable, while 39 percent are using wireless technologies, including GSM, HSPA, CDMA, EVDO and WiMax.

Taveras added that the allocation of additional spectrum for mobile services is scheduled for completion over the next 24 months. They have the 700 MHz frequency band, currently used for TV broadcast, and following the analogue switch-off scheduled for 2015, they will use it for provision of mobile broadband services.
