U.S. hails Dominican Republic’s effort against drugs, despite transit status

The United States praised Dominican Republic’s efforts against drug trafficking, but warned that its most important challenge is to halt endemic corruption and improve the public’s confidence in their Government.

Washington said the country may improve its efforts by installing radars, by effectively developing its helicopter commandos units, implementing protocols to control and maintain a line of defense and by naval cooperation with neighboring countries.

The report “Strategy on the International Control of Narcotics” sent by the Barack Obama Administration to the U.S. Congress, affirms that the cooperation between the Dominican Government and Washington to control drug trafficking and transnational crime continues strong, even when Dominican Republic again figures among the major countries used for the transit of illicit drugs from South America to the U.S. and Europe.

It said that cooperation continued in 2010, through the extradition of criminals linked to narcotics cases and the confiscation of illegal drugs.
