Death Toll Rises to 10 in Dominican Republic Crash

The death toll from the head-on crash involving a bus and a truck on the highway that links the Dominican Republic’s southern Azua and Barahona provinces has risen to 10, with five people injured, officials said.

Eight women, a man and a boy died in the crash near the town of El Numero, some 125 kilometers (75 miles) from Santo Domingo.

Six of the victims died instantly, the Metropolitan Transport Authority said.

The bus was headed for the city of Barahona, while the truck was on its way to the Dominican capital, the authority said.

None of the dead or injured – four men and a woman who were taken to a trauma hospital in Santo Domingo – have been identified, officials said.

All those hurt or killed in the accident were passengers on the bus, but no information was released about the fate of those riding in the truck.
