Lunch to help build church in the Dominican Republic

Petrolia's St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church is having a benefit soup and sandwich lunch on Sunday, Nov. 21, from noon to 2 p.m.

All proceeds from a freewill offering will buy supplies to build a church in Haina, the Dominican Republic.

Woodside Presbyterian Church in Pennsylvania has sent a team to the Dominican Republic the past two summers and hopes to complete the project in the next two to three years. The majority of the build occurs when a large group arrives in June each year.

Haina's Pastor Bronny Novas and his volunteers team up with the group from Woodside for a building blitz. Work could continue throughout the year if funds were available to purchase building materials. Pastor Novas currently holds worship services in a rented building each week.

Members of Project Santiago have been going to the area the past six years to build homes for impoverished families. This year, the group will also buy building supplies for the new church.

Kim Walko, a Petrolia member of Project Santiago and a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Petrolia, said "We have witnessed how a community is uplifted by helping each other build homes. To have the opportunity to help build a permanent place of worship will bring the community even closer together."
